Slice of Life is a regular update on the latest in my life. This is where I write about my books, movies, tv, food, fashion, family or whatever subjects are on my mind that week. It’s just a little glimpse of my slice.

  1. I am starting to comb through all the “Most Anticipated Fall Release Books” lists and thought this was an interesting one.
  2. I have been reluctant to give up my favorite skinny jeans in favor of the comeback of the high-wasted boot cut jeans I have been seeing everywhere the past couple years, but I finally took the plunge and bought these through the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale recently (sadly, they are no longer on sale). Still trying to decide how I feel about them but they definitely elongate my short legs. Now, the hunt is on for some comfy heels to wear with them.
  3. I posted a few months ago about people who read and listen to books at the same time. I was very curious about the hows and the whys of doing this but then I found this old post from one of my favorite bloggers. Does anyone use this service? I have always kept my audio and print books very separate so not sure it is something I need but I am definitely intrigued.
  4. My kids start school next week and while I am a little bit sad to see summer go, I am super excited for Fall weather, college football, getting back on a more predictable schedule and having a bit more time to myself.

On the Blog this Week:

My Hands Down Favorite Books of Summer – this posted last week but still wanting to spread it far and wide. Have you read any of these?

Currently Reading:

We were out of town last week, and I (sadly) was not able to get much reading done. So, I am still working my way through my eARC (NetGalley) of The Long Call (Minotaur, releases Sept 3rd). It is more of a slow burn mystery which I kind of have to be in the mood for so it is a little slow going. Song of Achilles has not taken off for me and I am THIS CLOSE to setting it aside. Our most recent road trip was not long enough to get all the way through Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane (listening to this series as a family), but we loved what we heard and will get back to it soon.

Just Finished:

Read The Invited on my Kindle app (IPad) and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a creepy ghost story in a similar vein as The Winter People (also by McMahon). Finished listening to The Princess Diarist (Libby, library app) and was completely shocked at how good it was. I picked it out for a light, entertaining read and it ended up being so much more. Someone (I don’t remember who) recommended Doiron’s books so I found the audio of his short story, The Bear Trap, through my library. I am not big on short stories but this one was intriguing and I found it especially interesting given how similar it is to the story of real life hermit Christopher Knight who was the subject of the book the Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit. I plan on reading up on the connection but for now, I am very interested in reading more from Doiron (I have The Poacher’s Son on hold at the library now).

Did Not Finish:

No DNFs to report this week!

Likely Up Next:

I keep hearing about The Whisper Man from my book friends on Instagram. While I do not currently have a copy in my possession and I should be reaching for something next that I actually own, I have never let that stop me before.

Listening to:

Catching up on a few book podcasts (this one and this one too) and then hope to find my next audio book. Thinking about listening to one of my all time favorites, The Spellman Files, since I have only ever read the print version and it has been years since I did that. Any other suggestions?

Recent TBR Additions:

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek and Atomic Habits are the newest additions to what has become my ridiculously long TBR list. I am starting to long for the year to be over so I can start fresh.

What’s happening in your slice?

  1. You sound incredibly busy! I got a pair of the higher waisted jeans last year and ended up really liking them, but I still where skinny jeans, too.

I’m sorry to hear Song of Achilles isn’t working for you. I loved it, but we all react differently to books. Have a great week.

    1. I have been super busy but hoping now that school has started, things will calm down. I am excited to try these new high waisted jeans….but the weather will have to cool off so it might be a while. 🙂

  2. I enjoy Ann Cleeves’ books, but THE LONG CALL wasn’t hitting the spot for me, so I put it down. I think it was a mood thing. I’ll go back to it later. I really like Jennifer McMahon. Her books are so creepy! The premise of THE INVITED is fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it as well.

    1. YES, I totally agree about The Long Call. My Instagram review on Friday said the same thing – it was her normal good writing but the story just did not pull me in. I will post about it more next week. My week this past week has been nuts so I am playing catch up.
